Calgene Filing Is a First: The Davis, Calif., agricultural biotechnology company asked the Food and Drug Administration to issue an advisory opinion on the use of a selectable marker gene that would be a component of genetically engineered food plants. The submission is expected to be a major test of how the FDA approaches reviews of genetically engineered products for consumption by humans.
