P.M. BRIEFING : N.Y. News Cites Union for Losses
The New York Daily News charged today that “intimidation and threats” by striking union employees have scared away its largest advertisers, including Alexander’s department stores, a $9-million-a-year ad account.
Alexander’s announced Monday that it had no plans to continue advertising in the News “at this time,” adding that it was making an ongoing evaluation of all media.
News spokesman John Sloan refused to verify Alexander’s withdrawal, commenting, “Due to the pattern of intimidation and threats against our advertisers, we are not going to confirm or deny any specific advertisers either leaving or staying in the News.”
Alexander’s completed the withdrawal of the News’ “big three” advertisers. Macy’s and A&S; stores, both of which spent at least $6 million on News ads annually, stopped advertising last week.
