Put On the Dog

How hard to imagine the uproar over the display of good old Dago’s name on a sheriff’s car (Dog’s Name to Be Taken Off K-9 Car, Nov. 11).

It is remarkable that any offense be taken since the name in question is that of a skilled, well-trained, totally committed, law-abiding member of a well-respected Sheriff’s Department that is not in the least eager for publicity or self-aggrandizement, which I suspect is not the case for the complaining parties.

As a citizen of Scottish-English descent, I have often enjoyed the rotund, balding, white-mustachioed “Col. Blimp,” a cartoon character usually portrayed as pompous, arrogant and often not too bright--a sort of a “Charge-of-the-Light-Brigade” single-mindedness. It never occurs to me to be offended because I am perfectly confident of the underlying strength and character of the subject shown in caricature.

I have answered to the name “Limey.” I am rather proud of that, as it brings to mind honorable sacrifice in service to the Crown all over the world.
