ORANGE : District OKs Accord With Teacher Raises

Share

The Orange Unified School District has approved a two-year contract with its teachers union after about nine months of talks.

The teachers won a 3% raise for the 1990-91 school year, retroactive to July 1, 1990, and cost-of-living increases for 1990-91. An additional 1.76% increase will be applied in the first year if state money is available.

The increase means that starting pay for new teachers will be $23,330. The maximum pay for teachers with 17 or more years of experience will be $47,502.

Also on the bargaining table had been a retiree benefits proposal calling for paying nearly all medical costs for retired workers and their dependents for life. Independent studies showed that this plan might eventually have bankrupted the district.

Instead, under the contract, teachers hired after July, 1991 will receive a supplement to Medicare rather than the current benefits plan.

New teachers will also need 15 years of service to be eligible for retiree benefits coverage. Current staff members are eligible after 10 years.

The contract was approved by 94% of the union members who voted, said Hazel Stover, president of the 1,100-member teachers union.
