Defending champion Gary Kasparov and his fellow Soviet rival Anatoly Karpov adjourned the 14th game of the World Chess Championship on Monday after both encountered time troubles after five hours of play.

Kasparov, using the Scotch Opening, a strategy shunned by top players since the late 1800s. moved an hour ahead on the clock and built up a threatening attack. But he gradually ran out of steam in the face of Karpov’s defense and joined his rival in a mad rush to complete the mandatory 40 moves before their clocks ran out.

Both had three pawns, a rook, a queen and king when Kasparov sealed his 41st move. They are tied in the 24-game match at 6 1/2 points.
