Page Group Publishing, owner of the Orange Coast Daily Pilot, said it has laid off a small number of employees throughout its six Southland publications.

The layoffs, which came Monday, are part of an overall cost-cutting effort at all Page Group publications, which include the Glendale News Press, two weeklies and two monthly magazines.

The Daily Pilot laid off a reporter, a photographer and several production employees as part of a belt-tightening forced on its parent company by tougher economic times, Robert E. Page, president of Page Group Publishing, said Tuesday. Including recent resignations, seven Pilot employees have left.

Page said a like number of editorial and production employees at the Glendale paper as well as several employees at the weeklies and magazines have been laid off or have resigned in the last six weeks.

“We’re trying to keep reductions in personnel to a bare minimum,” he said. At the same time, though, the Pilot is hiring a journalist for a new editing position, he said.

Page, former publisher of the Chicago Sun-Times, heads an investor group that bought all six publications in the last year.
