From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Apple Growers File Suit Over Alar Scare: As expected, the growers filed a multimillion-dollar lawsuit against “60 Minutes” and Natural Resources Defense Council, a Washington-based consumer group, seeking compensation for sagging sales during a scare over the growth chemical Alar. The industry has estimated growers lost more than $100 million following the news program’s Feb. 26, 1989, release of a report titled “Intolerable Risk: Pesticides in Our Children’s Food.” The report was done by the Natural Resources Defense Council. The class-action lawsuit was filed in Yakima County (Wash.) Superior Court.
