MOVIN’ AND GROOVIN’: Expect an announcement Monday that A&M; Records is naming Al Cafaro president of the label. The promotion makes Cafaro, who’s been at A&M; for nearly 14 years, only the third president in the label’s history. The big question--where does this leave gonzo promotion chief Charlie Minor, who had hoped to share the job? So far, reports have Minor getting a new, improved title at A&M; (which label execs have denied) or departing for a heady promo gig at a rival company, like Geffen Records (which also denies anything’s in the works). . . . Speaking of new titles: Watch for an announcement Monday that Atlantic Records is promoting longtime president Doug Morris to the lofty perch of co-chairman (with Atlantic founder Ahmet Ertegun). . . . And add Tower Records mogul Russ Solomon to the list of record store owners unhappy about stocking the new Peter Gabriel CD, which Geffen Records is releasing next week without a long box. “I like the Geffen people but I think they’re full of (it),” says the outspoken Solomon. “There’s no need to put out a jewel-box-only CD. They’re jumping the gun. We’ll probably carry the Gabriel CD, but we’ll leave it up to our individual stores whether to display it with just a jewel box or with our own blister-pack package.”
