Thatcher’s Resignation

Share

It took a woman to put Britain back on the map. But the Iron Lady has rusted a bit, and now it is time for her to go.

In 1979 when Margaret Thatcher became prime minister of Britain, she found the country in decline. She revitalized it by slashing income taxes, stimulating the growth of the middle class and increasing the number of people who owned homes.

Eleven years later the country is once more in decline. It is caused by the imposition of a poll tax, inflation (now at 11%), a decline in health services and education and Thatcher’s exotic nationalism that prevents her from joining Europe on key issues. She nostalgically looks to the past, but her Victorian views are no longer credible.
