Maybe homes should only have cold water because you might scald yourself, or only carpet because you might slip on a wooden floor. The idea that all homes should have sprinkler systems because you might have a fire is yet another example of bureaucrats issuing edicts “for your own good” (“Sprinklers: Hot Idea All or Wet?” by Jeanne Boyer, Oct. 14). While a home fire is tragic, life is filled with risks.

Please allow individuals to assess the risks they will tolerate and to act accordingly. Stop swaddling us in cotton batting to protect us from the world.
