Antonio Dacosta, 76, an artist and art critic who introduced surrealism to Portugal and became one of the country’s leading painters. Dacosta was inspired by French and Spanish surrealists, especially the Spanish artist Salvador Dali, and held the first surrealist exhibition in Portugal in 1940. In 1949, he abandoned painting to work as a journalist and art critic in Paris for Portuguese and Brazilian newspapers. Dacosta returned to painting in 1975. His early works show a dramatic, fluid use of forms and colors. Later works are more abstract with gentler color use, influenced by the rural landscapes of the Azores.
