Queen Elizabeth II today awarded Margaret Thatcher one of Britain’s highest honors, but the former prime minister, saying she had done “pretty well out of being Mrs. Thatcher,” made clear that she did not want to be called “Lady.”

Thatcher, who stepped down last month after a revolt in her Conservative Party, was elevated to the Order of Merit, an exclusive circle of just 24 members that once included her political hero, Winston Churchill.

Her husband Denis was given a baronetcy and the title “Sir Denis” by the queen, thus making his wife “Lady Thatcher.” But Thatcher said she will not use the title and would like to continue to be called by her married name.
