WILD AT HEART: The latest cause to pop up with its own benefit album is PETA, better known as People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. The animal-rights organization gets the proceeds from “Tame Yourself,” an all-star compilation due Jan. 29 from Rhino Records. It’s also the first benefit album with a corporate sponsor--John Paul Mitchell Systems. The hair-salon product company bankrolled the disc’s production costs and gets a plug on the album (the firm says it’s the first major line of professional salon products never tested on animals). As for the collection, it features new songs from the Pretenders (“Born for a Purpose”), Michael Stipe & the Indigo Girls (“I’ll Give You My Skin”), k.d. lang (“Damned Old Dog”), Belinda Carlisle (“Bless the Beasts and the Children”) plus fresh material from Exene Cervenka, Fetchin’ Bones, Aleka’s Attic featuring River Phoenix and a live track from the B-52’s.
