The Daily News and nine unions striking the newspaper have agreed to meet with a federal mediator in Washington, D.C., in a last-ditch attempt to reach a settlement to the bitter labor dispute.

Meanwhile, the Tribune Co. of Chicago, the paper’s corporate parent, is scheduled to hold a quarterly meeting of its board of directors Tuesday. Some Wall Street investment analysts have speculated that the 14-member board might decide to cut the company’s losses and close the paper, the New York Times reported.

News management and union officials said Sunday that they had been asked to meet by the director of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service.
