SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Tommy Lasorda was playing in a very major league Saturday. He was honored by the Intra-Science Research Foundation with its Humanitarian Award at a dinner at the Century Plaza. Honorees over the past 16 years have been scientists or businessmen, including Dr. Jonas Salk, Nobel laureate Dr. Linus Pauling and E.I. du Pont chairman Irving Shapiro.

The foundation cited Lasorda’s behind-the-scenes charity work as the reason for the award. Foundation president Craig Podell called him “a man who is cherished. People genuinely love what this man believes in.” As the focal point for this year’s dinner for 200 guests, Lasorda helped the foundation raise $50,000 for its work in providing seed money for research, symposiums and disseminating information on brain disorders, work that chairman Ted Egan called “funding tomorrow.”
