Group Barred From Mall Settles for $720,000

A Pasadena citizens group that was barred in 1985 from collecting signatures at the Plaza Pasadena shopping mall has settled with the mall owner for $720,000.

The settlement of the lawsuit, filed by Pasadena Citizens for Representative Government against the Hahn Co., was announced Monday. The mall, one of 25 California malls managed by the firm, had refused to allow the group to collect signatures for a city initiative.

Under the settlement, Hahn will pay the group’s $640,000 legal fee and $80,000 for community grants to be awarded later. The mall will allow political activities in five locations but can bar access 25 days a year and can prohibit solicitations. The new rules pertain only to the Pasadena mall and not to Hahn’s other facilities.
