Eagle-Picher Bankruptcy Petition Pulled: A court order consolidating nearly 70,000 asbestos lawsuits against Eagle-Picher Industries Inc. got an important legal boost, but representatives of injured workers promised to fight the settlement effort. U.S. District Judge Jack B. Weinstein in Brooklyn proceeded with imposing a class action for Eagle-Picher after a request to place the company in involuntary bankruptcy in Cincinnati was withdrawn. Under federal law, any action in the case would have been stalled if the bankruptcy petition had been accepted. Plaintiffs’ lawyers said they would challenge the consolidation.
