Western Digital to Write Off $70 Million: Caught in an ill-timed transition between technologies, the Irvine-based company will take the charge in the current quarter and close a plant in Puerto Rico as it accelerates plans to phase out its older computer products. The company will probably reduce its work force, either by attrition or layoffs, during the next six months, resulting in a net loss of about 500 jobs, which could include some in Irvine, the firm said.
