Costner Wins Big: Kevin Costner was named best director of 1990 and his “Dances With Wolves” was named best picture by the National Board of Review, an organization whose members are drawn mostly from academic circles. The board split its best actor award between Robin Williams and Robert De Niro for their co-starring roles in the upcoming film “Awakenings,” while Mia Farrow was named best actress for “Alice,” Woody Allen’s Christmas Day release. Joe Pesci won as best supporting actor for “GoodFellas” and Winona Ryder was named best supporting actress for “Mermaids.” France’s “Cyrano de Bergerac” won as best foreign-language film.
