GTE Orders AT&T; Equipment: GTE Corp. placed one of the biggest orders ever for mobile telephone equipment, agreeing to pay more than $600 million for products and service from American Telephone & Telegraph Co. Under the agreement, GTE will install advanced AT&T; cellular telephone systems in at least 36 cities, covering most of GTE’s markets. Cellular phones are portable units--commonly used in cars--that can be installed where regular lines can’t. It is the largest such deal that analysts who follow the industry can remember.
