Coming to the ‘Cabaret’

I find it unusually amusing that at the same time that one member of the Garden Grove City Council was denouncing that “foreigner” Shakespeare at the Grove Shakespeare Festival, the Garden Grove Community Theater, with which this same council member is associated and which he has stated he prefers to the Grove, was preparing a production of “Cabaret.”

Did this council member know that “Cabaret” is not only set in Berlin and deals, among other things, with the depravity of Germany between the wars (and is rather explicit about the whole matter), but that the play itself is as American as sauerkraut? It is based on a German novel of the period.

However, unlike my City Council, I prefer a world where both “Cabaret” and Shakespeare can be presented.

I am further amused that the Feeney-fiends, the keeper of Orange County morals, missed an opportunity to raise a ruckus and “protect” theatergoers from themselves, when in actuality “Cabaret” contains more juicy material to whip up those of stunted sensibilities than perhaps any other play presented in Orange County this season. And all I can say to that is thank God the morons proclaiming morality as their battle cry stayed home this time. May we be so lucky in the future.
