Short Takes : Concert Aimed at Reconciliation

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne and Kris Kristofferson held a concert with Indian performers aimed at bringing Indians and whites closer together.
Sunday’s Concert for Reconciliation stemmed from Gov. George Mickelson’s declaration of 1990 as Year of Reconciliation between whites and Indians. Between 150 and 400 Indian men, women and children were killed Dec. 29, 1890, by cavalry gunfire at Wounded Knee.
“We’re here to raise funds and consciousness for the Lakota people,” said Raitt, a Grammy-winning blues singer and guitarist. She referred to the name by which the Sioux Indians call themselves.
Money will be donated to several causes, including Oglala Lakota College and a group of Indians riding horses across the state to Wounded Knee to commemorate the massacre.
