CLIPBOARD : Sales And Use Tax Revenues

Orange County cities’ sales and use tax revenues dropped for the second consecutive month in October, the most recent month for which information is available. The October total, $20.1 million, was almost 20% less than the September amount, which itself was lower than in August. October’s was the fourth lowest total during the 12 months.

The amount was almost 12% higher than last October, however, and virtually all cities registered gains over October 1989. In fact, Dana Point and Villa Park both received at least 66% more than last year. The only exception was La Palma, which got about the same amount.

This October Anaheim received the most money, about $2.8 million, but it’s per capita amount, $10.44, was a little more than half Costa Mesa’s $19.09--the highest per capita amount of any city.

Each month city and county governments and other governmental organizations receive payments from the state in anticipation of actual sales tax revenues. In the fourth month, they receive a cleanup payment--the difference between actual revenues and the amounts previously received--plus the first advance payment for the next quarter. The amounts listed here are the second advance payment for the third quarter of 1990.
