NATION : 100-M.P.H. Winds Lash Guam

Typhoon Russ, the strongest storm to threaten this U.S. territory in 17 years, slammed the island with wind gusts exceeding 100 m.p.h. today.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, authorities said.

Winds were clocked at 90 m.p.h. with gusts to 115 m.p.h. when the storm made its closest approach about 4 a.m. dawn, said Capt. Dieter Rudolph, commander of the Joint Typhoon Warning Center.

He said the wind readings were taken at the typhoon center, near the north end of the 30-mile-long island, which runs north-south. The storm’s center passed 50 miles south of Guam, and the south coast got hit with the strongest winds.
