Police arrested former Bangladesh Vice President Moudud Ahmed at a hide-out today, a senior government official said.

“He was arrested by a special squad of police . . . and brought to his own house where he is now detained,” Home Ministry Secretary Azimuddin Ahmed said.

Moudud went into hiding after former President Hussain Mohammed Ershad was arrested along with his family Dec. 12.

Ershad, a former general who seized power in a 1982 bloodless coup, stepped down Dec. 4 after a violent campaign by 22 opposition parties, students and others. He is now in detention pending investigation into allegations of corruption.

“We wished he (Moudud) would give in voluntarily, but he did not. Anyway we gave him all required courtesy,” Ahmed said.

Police earlier arrested former Deputy Premier Shah Moazzem Hossain and Interior Minister Mahmudul Hasan. Most of Ershad’s officials are still in hiding.
