Adding Classrooms

Robert J. Niccum, L.A. school district director of real estate, was quoted in your paper as saying, “All public agencies are looking at maximum asset management” (“School Room,” by Ron Galperin, Nov. 18).

He should start by using the existing property and eliminate the 25% vacancy factor by putting in air conditioning and year-round schools. If more space is needed, most of the schools are single-story buildings so they could be increased in size, or buildings can be added on existing land.

These steps may cut his staff in half and may not be as exciting as going head-to-head with Donald Trump. But they could save us all money, which could go to teaching children how to read and write.
