Physician Indicted in Insurance Fraud: An Orange County physician was charged with 42 federal felonies alleging that he orchestrated a scheme to defraud medical insurance carriers out of more than $7 million in false insurance claims. The indictment alleges that Dr. Ameer M. Dixit, 55, assembled a telemarketing team to solicit patients for examinations at his clinics in Tustin, Torrance, Santa Ana, Oceanside, Vista, Escondido and San Diego. The examinations included state-of-the-art diagnostic tests performed on every willing patient, the indictment added. Dixit and his co-conspirators allegedly bilked the insurance companies by fabricating the patients’ medical histories to indicate that the tests were required--and thus covered by their insurance policies. Among the insurers that were defrauded were Blue Cross of California and Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. If convicted, Dixit faces 210 years in prison and a fine of $10.5 million. (Case No. CR90-960. Filed Dec. 19).
