‘Tawdry’ Struggle for Mayor’s Post

Share

Well, I see that our celebrated Rancho Palos Verdes City Council is at it again, squabbling like a bunch of grasping fishwives over who gets to play mayor the next time around.

I was always under the impression that this post was primarily of an honorary nature, with little significant imperial power. Obviously, I was wrong, for it seems most unlikely that any one of this tawdry gang of five is likely to be the least bit interested in any position that produces honor as its primary reward.

Indeed, if these people had any personal honor or integrity at all, they would resign en masse, and leave the governance of this politically blighted community to the tycoons of county government, however imperfect they may be. If this noble gesture did not measurably improve the quality of our civil administration, it would at least remove a layer or two of useless, self-serving bureaucracy from the backs of overburdened taxpayers without causing any significant decline in the caliber of our current local civil services.

Other than the taxpayers, the only ones who might possibly miss these buffoons would be the local news media who always count on them for a suitably beguiling filler for a very slow news day.
