Armada Arrives in Manila Bound for Gulf
The largest U.S. amphibious task force to leave the Pacific Coast in 25 years arrived in the Philippines on Thursday on its way to bolster allied forces in the Persian Gulf, the U.S. 7th Fleet said.
A 7th Fleet announcement said the armada of 13 combat ships staged simulated amphibious assaults before arriving at Subic Bay Naval Base, 50 miles northwest of Manila.
It described the armada as “the largest amphibious task force to leave the shores of the West Coast of the United States since 1965.”
The fleet is carrying the 5th Marine Expeditionary Brigade from Camp Pendleton.
