Volunteer Honored for Aid to Homeless

Gayle Burns, 59, of Garden Grove, who cooks and serves food at three of the six “Food in the Afternoon” sites for homeless and hungry people, has been named Outstanding Volunteer of the Year by Real Hope, a project of Lutheran Social Services.

Burns, a member of the Garden Grove United Methodist Church, also picks up and delivers baked goods and other food four days a week for Real Hope, a coalition of churches and social agencies.

Richard Kieva, 11, of Westminster, afflicted with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, has been named poster child of the Tri-County Chapter of the Muscular Dystrophy Assn. He is the son of David and Yvonne Kieva.

Personnel assistant Kyoko Nishitsuji was named General Government Employee of the Year; police officer John Minn was named Safety Employee of the Year, and police records supervisor Verleen Sparks was named Manager of the Year in Fullerton.

Each received a plaque and $350, and their names were inscribed on a perpetual plaque on permanent display in the Fullerton City Hall lobby.

Fullerton Realtor Tom Maxwell has been installed as president of the North Orange County Assn. of Realtors.

Maxwell is a third-generation Realtor born in Fullerton and has lived there ever since. He has an economics degree from Stanford and is a Navy veteran.

Paddy, 82, and Arthur McCullough, 83, who married at the height of the Depression, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary at Lake Forest Nursing Center in El Toro.

“Our primary goal in life has always been to bring happiness to each other,” she said. They have one child, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Oliver Cruz, a sixth-grader at Reilly School, won the 1990 Elementary Spelling Bee of the Capistrano Unified School District. Two Orange County girls are Western Region semifinalists in Teen Magazine’s 1991 “Great Model Search. . . .”

Kimi Anderson, 16, of Irvine and Brenda Anderson (no relation to Kimi), 17, of Lake Forest are among 480 girls, ages 12-19, competing for the top prize--their photo on the cover of 4-million circulation Teen. The winner will be announced in May.
