Shevardnadze’s Resignation

Share

Shevardnadze’s resignation shocked the world. The “dictatorship” to which he referred is the Soviet Union’s collective right--that bureaucratic enclave, entrenched in inaction, determined to squash any democratic change. He was not referring to Gorbachev whom he has always supported and will continue to do so.

Gorbachev may be moving too far to the right. He should not appoint any hard-liners on the resurgent right. It is they who are a danger to the Soviet Union, they who will try to return the country to despotism and repression.

Shevardnadze’s resignation is a disaster for the Soviet Union and the world. There is no one of his stature to replace him. Gorbachev lost his right arm. The hard-liners will attempt to remove his left.
