UCSD Cruises Into Championship Game

UC San Diego advanced to the championship of its tournament with a 66-50 semifinal victory over Scranton (Pa.) Saturday night at Triton Gym.

The Tritons will meet St. Thomas (Minn.), an 87-52 winner against Millikin (Ill.), in the title game at 8 tonight.

Cari Young (20 points, 14 rebounds) and Lisa Beaver (16 points, 11 rebounds) combined to lead UCSD (6-3). Lynne Kempski scored 17 for Scranton. UCSD outrebounded Scranton, 50-30.

Ellen Hanson led the surge for St. Thomas (6-1) with 22 points and 14 rebounds, with added production from Laurie Trow’s 18 points.

Jill Brower recorded 24 points, six rebounds and four steals for William Smith College of Geneva, N.Y., in a 92-47 romp over Smith College of Northampton, Mass., in a consolation semifinal. Phoebe Jacobs had 15 points and three assists for Smith (4-4). William Smith is 7-2.

In Carroll College’s (Waukesha, Wis.) 73-52 consolation victory over Wheaton College (Norton, Mass.), Tina Langhough supplied 15 points and 12 rebounds. Carroll improved to 8-3 and meets William Smith today at 3 in the consolation final.

University of San Diego lost to 10th ranked Nevada Las Vegas, 71-61, at USD.

After trailing by eight at halftime, Christi English scored two baskets to pull USD (3-8) within four (39-35) with 18:35 remaining in the second half.

UNLV (9-0) then went on a scoring spree and outscored USD, 17-2, in the following seven minutes.

Chris Enger scored 14 points, had five rebounds and three blocks for USD. English added 12 points and led the team with eight rebounds. Molly Hunter had six assists.

USD shot 24 of 64 (37.5%) from field and only 10 of 18 (55.6%) from free throw line. UNLV shot 28 of 50 (56%) and 14 of 24 (58.3%) from the line.

Sharon Hargrove led UNLV with 19 points and six assists. Debra Davis scored 12 points and six rebounds.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

A bleak show on the boards, where Point Loma Nazarene was outrebounded 29-12, hurt the Crusaders as they fell to Olivet Nazarene, 81-70, in the Nazarene College Holiday Classic in Olathe, Kan.

PLNC finished the tournament 1-2 and moved to 7-5 for the season. Mark Bulgin finished with a game-high 18 points for the Crusaders. Teammate Gary Litten added 15.

Olivet (8-4) played with twice as many players as PLNC, who used seven. Three Crusaders are injured and two are ineligible.

SOCCER

Cleveland Crunch player-coach Kai Haaskivi, whose 7-14 team has lost seven of its last eight games, was fired as coach of the MSL club Saturday and was replaced by assistant coach Trevor Dawkins.

Haaskivi, who is out of action with a groin pull, will remain on the Crunch’s player roster.

George Hoffman, Crunch chairman and majority owner, announced the ouster of Haaskivi and appointment of Dawkins, who joined the Crunch this season. He previously had a three-year record of 90-36 as coach of the Canton Invaders.
