From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Rebels blew up a banking center and attacked an army base near the presidential palace in San Salvador, then announced they were ending a six-week limited offensive. “We have agreed to suspend military maneuvers across the country . . . to continue negotiations for a definitive cease-fire,” the leftist Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front said on clandestine radio. Peace talks have been stalled on the issue of military reform, with the rebels calling for dismantling or a purge of the army, while the rightist government insists that the armed forces are untouchable.
