World IN BRIEF : SURINAME : Bouterse Becomes Army Leader Again

One week after a bloodless coup, Col. Desi Bouterse announced that he has taken over again as army commander with the consent of Suriname’s newly appointed president, Johan Kraag. Bouterse angrily resigned his post Dec. 23 after a dispute with President Ramsewak Shankar, who was then ousted. Meanwhile, Venezuelan President Carlos Andres Perez called for the Organization of American States to impose economic sanctions on Suriname.
