Sheriff’s deputies have arrested a 41-year-old Valley Center woman on suspicion of embezzling $237,000 from a trash collection company.
Linda Marie Smith was arrested Wednesday in her home in the 14000 block of Wood Valley Road, said Sheriff’s Lt. Linda Fulton.
Smith is being held at the Las Colinas Jail in Santee on $10,000 bail, jail officials said.
Smith had worked as a bookkeeper for Ramona Disposal for 17 years. The company is situated in the 100 block of 14th Street in Ramona.
Investigators found that she withdrew the funds from the company’s savings account between February, 1988, and February, 1989. She allegedly “manipulated bank statements,” photocopied them, then forwarded them to the company’s auditor to hide the theft, sheriff’s officials said.
