WORLD : No More Soviet Troops to Baltics
The Soviet armed forces chief of staff said today that no more troops will be sent to the rebel Baltic republics, where tension between the army and the local population has flared in recent weeks.
In an interview with Tass news agency, Gen. Mikhail Moiseyev said no further reinforcements will be sent to Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia where government officials accuse the army of working to prevent national independence.
Moiseyev gave the interview after a meeting in Moscow on Thursday with President Anatolijs Gorbunovs of Latvia, whose government has protested over the occupation of the main press printing house in Riga by Soviet Interior Ministry forces.
“Not one further soldier will be sent to the Baltics. We could even consider cutting the number of troops there at the moment,” the general declared.
