G.G. (Jerry) Campbell; FBI Agent Ambushed Dillinger

G.G. (Jerry) Campbell, 84, one of the FBI agents who took part in the ambush of gangster John Dillinger outside a Chicago theater in 1934. Campbell, who retired in 1965 after 31 years with the FBI, was one of two surviving members of the FBI team that killed Dillinger, according to an article last year in a bureau publication. Dillinger, head of a gang that pulled off daring bank robberies during the Depression, was set up for the ambush at the Chicago movie theater by Anna Sage, the so-called “Lady in Red,” who was cooperating with federal agents. Campbell also helped track down such legendary gangsters as Bonnie Parker, Clyde Barrow, Ma Barker and “Pretty Boy” Floyd. Campbell, who was born in Kansas, opened the bureau’s Palo Alto office in 1946. He worked after his retirement for a firearms company and shared his firearms expertise with police departments in Northern California. In Palo Alto on Tuesday of a heart attack.
