Lamberti Wins 200 Freestyle With Record Time for Meet

World record-holder Giorgio Lamberti of Italy won the men’s 200 freestyle at the World Swimming Championships today in a meet-record 1:47.27 with a burst in the final split. American Doug Gjertsen, fastest in the morning’s heats, finished last.

With afternoon temperatures again around 100 degrees, Americans picked up silver medals in women’s diving and synchronized swimming.

Gao Min of China won the 1-meter springboard over Wendy Lucero of the United States. Heidemarie Bartova of Czechoslovakia was third.

Sylvie Frechette of Canada won the solo synchro swimming title, beating American rival Kristen Babb by 4 1/2 points. Mikako Kotani of Japan was third.
