WILSON’S TEAM: KEY APPOINTMENTS SO FAR

Governor Pete Wilson has selected half of his top level Cabinet advisors. Most have experience in government or in political campaigns and some have worked for the interest groups they will now oversee.
Bob White, chief of staff, longtime aide and confidant, has been Wilson’s top aide since 1968 when Wilson entered the Assembly. Will preside over the day-to-day operation of the executive office and will decides who gets to see the governor.
Cabinet Positions and appointee
Education and Child Development Services: A newly created agency that will integrate public health services with school curriculum. It will develop a statewide mentor program that uses volunteers to tutor students with special problems.
Maureen DiMarco, past president of the California School Boards Assn.
Resources Agency: Oversees departments such as the the Coastal Commission; Conservation Corps; Department of Conservation, and the Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
Douglas P. Wheeler, former Sierra Club executive director.
Department of Food and Agriculture: Monitors state agriculture and livestock for quality, product safety, weight accuracy, disease and pest control. Also deals with the food supply for domestic and export markets and supervises county fairs.
Henry Voss, Deukmejian appointee and former president of the California Farm Bureau remains in the post.
Business, Transportation and Housing : Advises the governor on transportation, housing and business policies. Oversees agencies such as the Department of Commerce, Department of Motor Vehicles, Department of Housing and Community Development and the California Highway Patrol.
Carl D. Covitz, developer and Wilson backer since 1978 has also backed Democratic candidates including Atty. Gen. John Van de Kamp and Mayor Tom Bradley.
Department of Finance: Advises the governor on state fiscal policy and is responsible for preparing an annual financial plan for the state.
Thomas Hayes, former state treasurer under Deukmejian.
Wilson has not yet made appointments for these remaining Cabinet positions: secretary of health and welfare; director of industrial relations, secretary of youth and adult correctional agency; secretary of environmental affairs; secretary of state and consumer services.
