A South African citizen who worked as a press officer at a U.S. diplomatic post in Berlin has been detained on suspicion of spying for the Soviet KGB, German authorities said today.

The arrest order for Stephen Laufer was issued at the request of the chief federal prosecutor, according to a spokesman for the prosecutor’s office, Hans-Juergen Foerster.

He said Laufer is suspected of having spied for the KGB from 1977 until the beginning of 1990.
