P.M. BRIEFING : Shrimp Ban to Save Turtles Seen
- Share via
WASHINGTON — The United States could ban shrimp imports from Latin American and Caribbean nations unless they take steps to protect turtles, the State Department said today. The announcement drew a cautious response from affected countries and praise from environmentalists.
Nations that do not come up with a plan by May 1 to protect endangered sea turtles from getting caught in shrimp nets face a ban on U.S. shrimp imports, the department said.
“We think that is a positive step,” said Ginette Hemley of the World Wildlife Fund. She said Caribbean basin turtles are among the most endangered turtle species in the world.
