Seymour’s Appointment

Share

Wilson’s appointment of Seymour will be the first of many betrayals of the Reagan Republicans that we can expect. Seymour is such a weak candidate that he lost the Republican lieutenant governor nomination as an abortion flip-flopper in the 1990 primaries to an under-financed pro-life candidate.

Seymour’s ineptness, coupled with the voter’s nationwide rejection of all abortion flip-floppers in the November elections, guarantees that a Democrat will be elected in 1992 to finish out Wilson’s Senate term, while a real Republican succeeds to Sen. Alan Cranston’s Democratic seat. Then in 1994, the Republicans can nominate another real Republican for the Senate, even though Wilson will lose the governorship.

Nevertheless, if Wilson manages to beat off a new Democratic gerrymander of congressional districts this year, he will have done the job for which he was elected.
