THOUSAND OAKS : Trash Collection Fees to Rise Again

Share

About 30,000 Thousand Oaks residences can expect higher trash bills after the City Council approved an increase in garbage collection fees.

The City Council’s 4-1 decision Tuesday night followed a debate about the frequency of rate increases.

In voting against the rate increase, Councilwoman Elois Zeanah said that residents have seen garbage bills rise once every six months for the past two or three years, with no plan for citywide recycling.

Last year, residents saw two increases on their monthly trash bills, and another rate increase is expected in July, said Steve Elam, deputy finance director.

Under the plan adopted by the council, rates for residential customers will jump by 11.4%. Residents of single-family houses will pay $14.60 a month, while residents of multifamily units will pay $10.50 a month.

The last increase was in July, when residents of single-family houses saw bills increase from $12.70 to $13.10. Multifamily residences saw an increase from $9.10 to $9.40.

Haulers asked for higher rates because of rising fuel costs and a 14% increase in dumping fees at the Simi Valley Landfill.
