L.A. Harbor Is Reopened After Oil Spill
Cleanup crews were working Wednesday evening to sop up the remnants of an oil spill that forced authorities to temporarily close a portion of Los Angeles Harbor, Coast Guard officials said.
The spill occurred at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, as a South Korean freighter was taking on fuel from a barge at Berth 176, north of the Vincent Thomas Bridge. The vessel’s tank apparently overflowed, sending about 1,050 gallons of the fuel oil into the harbor, officials said.
To prevent the slick from spreading, cleanup crews set up containment booms, and the Coast Guard closed the port’s East Basin channel from 10:30 p.m. Tuesday to 10 a.m. Wednesday. Coast Guard officials said the cleanup work may not be finished until Friday.
