STATE : 2 Dead, 8 Hurt in Pileup on I-5
Two people died and eight others were injured in a fiery chain-reaction pileup of 22 vehicles on a remote stretch of Interstate 5, authorities said today.
Seven big-rig trucks and three cars were set ablaze in the crash, CHP dispatcher Joe Albitre said.
Officer Travis Mitchell said the accident occurred Wednesday night when motorists ran into a wall of fog and slowed abruptly.
The wreckage forced officers to close both the northbound and southbound lanes of Interstate 5 near Buttonwillow, about 25 miles northwest of Bakersfield, for about eight hours.
