Mayor Loni Hancock was sworn in to the rousing cheers of a standing-room-only crowd before the new City Council quickly turned to affairs of state and the world. “In these difficult times, we’re going to have to roll up our sleeves and innovate,” Hancock said in her brief inaugural address. “We must take the risks of leadership, from helping people out of homelessness and back into our society to working for clean air and recycling our garbage so we will have a planet to pass on to our children.” Council members unanimously approved sweeping resolutions condemning war in the Persian Gulf and proclaiming Jan. 8 as African National Congress Day.
