Police and immigration authorities boarded a luxury cruise ship early today as it docked in Los Angeles Harbor to investigate the stabbing death of a crew member, allegedly by his longtime cabin mate, officials said.

The Dawn Princess docked about 7 a.m. in Berth 93 and was boarded by U.S. Coast Guard officials, Los Angeles Police detectives and agents from the Immigration and Naturalization Service.

Alexander Xisto was attacked and killed Thursday night as the ship passed through Mexican waters on its return to Los Angeles from a four-day Mexican cruise.

Coast Guard Lt. Dan Mincher said another engine-room crew member, Leonardo Cruz, was suspected in the stabbing and was held until the ship docked.

Xisto and Cruz, both Portuguese nationals, worked for Princess Cruises for about 15 years and shared a cabin for much of that time, Hall said.
