Gunmen with AK-47 assault rifles opened fire on a funeral vigil for a member of the African National Congress early today, killing 30 people and seriously wounding 26, police said.

The attackers “fired indiscriminately at their victims in the open and through the tent walls” after pulling up in a vehicle outside a house beside the tent camp, according to police spokesman Col. Johan Mostert.

“Thirty people were killed, 26 seriously hurt and many others injured to varying degrees,” Mostert said.

ANC spokeswoman Gill Marcus told the South African Press Assn. news agency that 31 people may have been killed.

The attack took place at a tent camp in the black township of Sebokeng, south of Johannesburg, Mostert said. The gunmen apparently escaped.

Sebokeng has been a major flashpoint during the surge of black internecine fighting, which has killed up to 1,000 people in Johannesburg townships since flaring in August last year.
