COLLEGE ROUNDUP : UC Irvine Men Defeat Long Beach in Swimming

The UC Irvine men’s swim team won its Big West Conference dual meet opener, defeating Cal State Long Beach, 141-103, at Long Beach Friday. The Irvine women’s team lost to Long Beach, 152-85.

Jeff Klatt won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1 minute 59.51 seconds and the 200 butterfly (1:56.63) for Irvine (2-1, 1-0).

In nonconference women’s basketball:

Western New Mexico 77, Chapman 74--Tiffany Thomas scored 20 points for Western New Mexico. Jennifer Ballenger scored 15 for Chapman.

In nonconference men’s volleyball:

UC Irvine 2, Hawaii 0--Dave Petker had 17 kills to lead Irvine to a 15-10, 15-9 win in the Santa Barbara tournament. UC Irvine also defeated California, 10-15, 15-12, 15-11.
