Anti-Abortion Protest Closes Clinic
About 100 abortion opponents from the San Gabriel chapter of Operation Rescue apparently kept an El Monte clinic from opening Sunday morning.
Callers to Family Planning on Valley Boulevard were referred by a taped message to the answering service of a physician named Dr. Nicholas Braemer. A woman at the service said Braemer had told her that all appointments for the day were canceled because of the anti-abortion demonstration, which lasted about 2 1/2 hours.
El Monte Police Sgt. Brian Dahl said there was no counterdemonstration by abortion rights advocates, and no one was arrested.
“The Operation Rescue people just got lonely and left,” he said.
